“On February 12, 2015, WINGS OF DESIRE will light up the screen at the Berlinale Palast in honour of Wim Wenders. The 65th Berlin International Film Festival will dedicate an Homage to Wim Wenders and present him with an Honorary Golden Bear for his lifetime achievement.” writes the Berlinale Press Office. Well deserved, and a film well chosen, we say.
Wings and desire -what an apt translation. Swiss actor Bruno Ganz (loved him in PANE E TULIPANI) plays an angel who chooses mortality for the love of a woman. Potsdamer Platz, the Berlin Wall, the divided worlds who’d so much belong together. All that has changed, and all that has remained the same. Poetry in (mostly) black and white, written by Wim Wenders and our Austrian Peter Handke. A genius soundtrack featuring a mesmerizing Nick Cave, otherworldly shots, who still look fresh today. Remarkably little 1980ish about this one of many masterpieces of one of Germanys greatest directors. We hope we’ll be in Berlin for you in February.
Here is a very good source for those who want to read more about the film.
