I should have watched EASTERN PROMISES before I saw THE EQUALIZER – I might have drawn some parallels and I might have reduced THE EQUALIZER to a brilliantly photographed “me-too”. Why, Viggo Mortensen fighting two armed thugs au naturel is so much more exciting than what Denzel Washington can do with a corkscrew. Earnestly, while THE EQUALIZER is a feast for the eyes this David Cronenberg movie is a classical narration with all the necessary ingredients: A bad guy, a dangerous liaison, a heroine, a lot of blood, a showdown and even a kiss off. After which we get so see our not-so-bad guy sitting in the “point of losers” – that’s in the middle of the screen, according to what I learned from the great Erich Dworak at ORF dramaturgy school. Look for it in films. People sitting in the middle (worst if viewed from above) are helplessly caught in a situation they don’t really want to be in. EASTERN PROMISES is a moving, marvellous film – duly screened at Vienna International Film Festival as a tribute to the great Viggo Mortensen. [aartikel]B0015HPAEI:left[/aartikel]
